34 unmanned substations protected without adding guards

Intrusion, fire-smoke and loitering detection on XCORE-16 appliances turned remote substations into monitored, self-reporting sites.

Challenge

The challenge

What the site was dealing with before deployment.

Unmanned substations in rural areas were targets for cable and equipment theft, with no one on site to respond.

Cable trench fires spread quickly, and conventional detectors often triggered only after visible flame had developed.

Solution

What we deployed

The configuration and how it was rolled out.

  • Intrusion zones defined along the fence line and around switchgear on XCORE-16 appliances at each site.
  • Video smoke and flame detection enabled in cable trenches, battery rooms and equipment stores.
  • Alerts pushed over 4G to the regional control centre, with the nearest patrol dispatched automatically.
  • Health monitoring reports box and camera status daily so failures are noticed centrally.

  • All 34 sites are now monitored continuously with no increase in guard headcount.
  • Intrusion alerts reach the control centre in under five seconds, day or night.
  • Two incipient cable-trench fires were caught in their first minutes.
